What Are The Educational Requirements For A Chiropractor in Sterling?

Have you ever wondered how many years your Sterling chiropractor went to school for or how their education compares to that of other health care professionals? Knowing your doctor’s educational background and additional certifications is often essential to helping you choose the health care provider that is right for you. While the word “doctor” automatically implies an extensive academic curriculum, each health care specialist has a unique and individualized educational program to complete prior to practicing in the field.

Our doctors at Alternative Wellness Clinic have designed this article to help you understand your chiropractor’s educational background and how it may affect your care.

What are your chiropractors educational requirements?

As with many professionals, the specific requirements outlined often vary from state to state. Typically, chiropractors are required to have completed undergraduate pre-medical studies and obtained a bachelor’s degree prior to admission to a post graduate chiropractic college. Each chiropractic college has undergone a meticulous evaluation process to become certified by the Department of Education as an accredited educational institution.

The amount of time that your chiropractic doctor spends at a specific chiropractic academic institution is impressive. In fact, your chiropractor has spent a minimum of 4,200 hours at a chiropractic college prior to receiving his diploma. This time is spent in the classroom, laboratory, and clinic learning about the various aspects of the chiropractic profession and health care in general.

In the classroom, your doctor focuses his studies on the subjects of anatomy, physiology, diagnosis, pathology, biochemistry, neuromuscular and orthopedic evaluation, pediatric and geriatric care, microbiology, nutrition, immunology, radiology, philosophy, and clinical research. While this may seem like a lot, all of this information is assimilated and tested prior to advancement to clinical work. Once the student has completed his academic work, he will typically spend a minimum of 1,000 hours at a campus clinic under the guidance of a clinic doctor. During this time he will learn hands on how to diagnosis and treat patients in real clinical situations.

During your chiropractors education they will be tested through a number of different evaluations. Not only is your doctor subject to evaluation by their chiropractic college, they must also pass a series of national board examinations. Chiropractors practicing in the United States are required to have passed a series of four national board exams which evaluate them on their understanding of the basic sciences, clinical sciences, physiological therapeutics, diagnostic imaging, case management, and clinical competency. In addition to these requirements, following graduation and completion of national board examinations, each chiropractor must become certified by their state licensing agency.

The completion of these standards is not the end of the educational journey for chiropractic doctors. Depending on the state, each chiropractor is required to complete additional approved course work at designated times following their licensure. For example, Wisconsin requires a minimum of 40 hours of continuing education every two years following graduation.

So how does your chiropractors education compare to other health care professionals?

After reading the above information, I feel it is safe to say that your chiropractic doctor knows far more about your health than just treating your back. To help understand this it is useful to compare a chiropractor’s education to other members of the health care community. Since many people are familiar with a medical doctor, we will compare their educational background with that of a chiropractic doctor. For starters, the typical chiropractic student will have completed a total of approximately 2,419 hours of academic work prior to the initiation of clinical studies. In comparison, the majority of medical students will have completed somewhere around 2,047 hours of study. Further, while each health care discipline has its strengths, chiropractic students undergo more hours of study in the fields of anatomy, embryology, physiology, biochemistry, diagnosis, x-ray, and orthopedics. In contrast, medical practitioners have had more classroom hours studying the subjects of pathology, psychology, and obstetrics.

When analyzing these numbers it is important to understand that while differences exist, each of your doctors has undertaken and completed a similar core education. In addition, it is important to remember that each of your doctors (even in the same health care discipline) possess various strengths to compensate for other health care professionals’ weaknesses and utilize a different approach to healing the body. In the end, finding the doctor that understands your needs and has the tools to provide you with the most appropriate care is what is important.

  • How to Choose a Sterling Chiropractic Office

How to Choose a Sterling Chiropractic Office

Whether you are looking to change from your current chiropractor or you’re trying chiropractic treatment for the first time, it’s important to choose the right one to suit your needs and your lifestyle. Chiropractic care is an effective way to eliminate scores of health issues naturally, but it’s still important to find a chiropractor you feel at ease with. Here are tips on how to choose a Sterling chiropractic office.

    Ask the Right Questions

When you have your initial consultation with a new chiropractor it’s important to ask questions. Find out how long he or she has been practicing, ask if they have a special area of expertise, and make sure to ask about their experience with your specific health issue. You’ll also get a good sense of whether they’re the right one by watching how they respond to your basic questions. Ideally, you’d like someone that is patient, friendly, and courteous throughout the consultation.

If you notice the chiropractor seems agitated or isn’t allowing you to finish your sentences before answering, you might want to shop around. Since chiropractic treatment is foreign to a lot of people, it’s important for the chiropractor to take the time necessary to explain the entire process clearly until you understand it.

    Follow Your Instincts

Sometimes everything seems to check out but you just have a bad feeling for one reason or another. You’re always in control when it comes to selecting a Sterling chiropractic office, so follow your instincts whether they are good or bad.

You’ll find that most chiropractors are great people that are looking to provide you with the best possible care.  If you do your homework you’ll find one the resonates with you.

One of the most common questions I get asked as a doctor is how do I find a great chiropractor in Sterling?  In some cities there are dozens to choose from and it can be difficult to know if the doctor you are considering is right for you.  This article will help to walk you through the steps that I would use to find a great doctor to take care of me.

Most patients choose their chiropractor based on the look of the outside of the office or how nice their website is.  I agree that a doctor that keeps up their office and that has a great website is probably a good choice, but there’s more to it than that.  Chiropractic is a very diverse profession so there are some deeper questions to ask.

The best way to know if a chiropractor is right for you is to sit down and talk to them.  Learn about who they are as a person and why they became a chiropractor.  There are many different styles of adjusting and many different philosophies in the chiropractic field.  When you find a passionate doctor you have found what you’re looking for.

Ultimately you need to find someone that really cares about you and your well being.  A doctor that is going to be focused on your health and that has a plan to get you back on track.  If you feel uncomfortable then do your homework and you’ll find the best choice for you.

  • Chiropractors in Sterling have Extensive Schooling

Chiropractors in Sterling have Extensive Schooling

One question that many people seem to have about chiropractors concerns the amount of schooling required in order to practice. It wasn’t too long ago that some people referred to chiropractic as “quackery”, or at best, an incomplete healing discipline. Times have changed and today people from all walks of life utilize chiropractic, but the educational requirements are still a source of mystery to many. The truth is, chiropractors in Sterling have extensive schooling that enables them to treat a wide range of health issues effectively and safely.

    Extensive Educational Requirements

In order to become a chiropractor, you are required to meet some of the most demanding educational requirements of any health care profession. Most chiropractors have already taken close to four years of pre-med undergraduate courses before they even apply to chiropractic college. This includes biology, physics, psychology, inorganic and organic chemistry, and all of the associated lab work.

If you are accepted into an accredited chiropractic college, then the really demanding work begins. You’ll work through four to five academic years, which includes a lot of time learning the hands-on adjusting techniques that will become a big part of your practice. A chiropractor has no room for error when recommending a treatment path and then adjusting a patient’s spine, so the training must be deep and detailed.

The complete educational curriculum for chiropractors in Sterling includes minimum classroom, laboratory, and clinical experience of 4,200 hours. The accrediting agency that approves the courses is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, which has been true for over 25 years. Chiropractors must be able to assess a specific health condition, provide appropriate advice and treatment, and refer patients to other health care professionals when necessary.

Chiropractors have classroom requirements equal to or greater than traditional medical professionals.  This in-depth training allows doctors of chiropractic to be considered primary care physicians.  Primary care physicians are considered point of entry physicians and do not require a referral.

We hope this information was helpful.  Our team at Alternative Wellness Clinic is here to help with any questions that you might have.

  • Are You Looking for a Top Sterling Chiropractor?

Are You Looking for a Top Sterling Chiropractor?

The decision to seek out a reputable Sterling chiropractor to help with your sore back, sore neck, poor range of motion or other health condition is a great way to get your body back into balance. Whether you’ve suffered an injury playing sports, been in an auto accident, or just feel the wear and tear of everyday life, chiropractic treatment can make a big difference in the way you feel on a day-today basis. Here are a few reasons why so many people are looking for a chiropractor.

    Relief From Chronic Pain

Chronic pain, or pain that is ongoing and persists for months or even years, is a huge problem in modern society. People have back pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, and headaches that interfere with their quality of life. Receiving treatment from a Sterling chiropractor can ease your chronic pain and often eliminate it entirely.

    Treating Causes Instead of Symptoms

The reason chiropractors have such a good track record when it comes to reducing pain is because they look at the body as a whole and treat the cause of the pain, not just the symptoms. If a patient suffers from debilitating headaches caused by misaligned vertebrae in the neck, pumping them full of pain medication is only treating the symptom of the main problem. When the medication wears off, the symptom, or pain, persists because the cause wasn’t addressed. When the cause is treated effectively the symptoms can disappear.

    Follow These Tips

Of course, doing a little research to make sure you’re with the right Sterling chiropractic office is also important. Ask around to your family members, friends, and co-workers to see if any of them can recommend a chiropractor in your area. Chances are, you’re going to have more than just one treatment so you’ll want to find one that makes you feel comfortable.

When looking for a Sterling chiropractor, ask questions such as:

    • How long have you been in business?
    • Do you specialize in one area over others?
    • How many different chiropractors work at this office?

As you speak with the chiropractor, you’ll also be able to get a feel for who they are and if they are a good fit for you. If you feel comfortable throughout the process and encouraged that your pain will be reduced, you’re at the right place.

  • Finding a Chiropractor in Sterling

    Finding a Chiropractor in Sterling

If you are considering chiropractic care in Sterling and have browsed the web or local yellow pages to find a doctor to help you it is likely that you have discovered that there are multiple possible choices.  This is where it becomes a little more difficult.   The next question you have probably asked yourself is what makes one Sterling chiropractor different from the next, or how do I find the best chiropractor for me?

While this can be challenging, there are a few things that can set one chiropractor apart from another.  Knowing these things will go a long way in helping you find the best chiropractor for you in Sterling, and as a result, lead to better results during your care.  This article has been designed to assist you with some questions to ask and aspects of a chiropractor to evaluate when deciding which one is right for you.

Tips for finding the best chiropractor in Sterling:

    1.    Often, the first place to start your search shouldn’t be the internet or local yellow pages, but instead by asking trusted friends and relatives.  Ask these people about their experiences with different doctors and who they would they would seek for care if they needed help.  Recommendations or referrals can speak a lot about the practices of different offices.

    2.    Once you have narrowed your search, it is often helpful to schedule an initial consultation with a chiropractor to ask any questions you have.  It has been found that the results of treatment at any health care facility are not only dependent on the care provided by the doctor, but also how comfortable the patient feels around the treating physician.

    3.    When searching for a chiropractor many people don’t realize that there are a number of different techniques that they can use.  Typically, chiropractors have been taught a variety of techniques and will refine one or more to meet your individual condition.  When searching for a doctor make sure to include questions about how the doctor adjusts.

Chiropractic adjustments can vary from the doctor using their hands to the use of a variety of instruments.  They can also be so light that you may feel only a light sensation or the adjustment may cause a popping sound called a cavitation.  Not only is it important to find a chiropractor that you are comfortable talking to, but also make sure you are comfortable with their adjusting technique.

    4.    Finally, it is also useful to determine your chiropractors’ educational background.  While all chiropractors undergo a rigorous academic career, there are a number of different chiropractic schools to attend.  Insuring that the chiropractor you are researching has graduated from a school that is accredited by the Council on Chiropractic education is fundamental.  Additionally, researching if your prospective doctor has any additional certifications can be useful.

We hope this article has been helpful for you.  While one chiropractor may be the best for one particular person you may find that another is the best for you.  Using your own judgment and common sense can go a long way in the determination process.

  • 4 Reasons to Choose a Sterling Chiropractor

4 Reasons to Choose a Sterling Chiropractor

Chiropractic has proven itself as a worthy and incredibly effective way to treat an assortment of different health issues. From headaches, to backaches, and sleep disorders, chiropractic care can make a world of difference. Of course, choosing a chiropractor can be difficult. Here are 4 reasons to choose a Sterling chiropractor:

    1) Your Best Interests at Heart

One of the primary reasons a Alternative Wellness Clinic chiropractor is a great choice is because we have your best interests at heart. This means, our sole objective is to eliminate your specific health issue by treating the underlying cause of the problem. Conventional medicine tends to work at treating symptoms.  This can be helpful, but our focus is on finding the cause of the condition.

    2) Experience

It’s true that all licensed chiropractors go through extensive training before they are able to treat patients, but there is still something to be said for experience. When you choose a Sterling chiropractor there is a good chance that we have helped other patients with the same problem. For most patients this provides peace of mind and a level of comfort that may not be available if the chiropractor has less experience.

    3) Honesty

Along with the experience factor, you’ll get complete honesty and transparency when you choose a chiropractor from Alternative Wellness Clinic. We will communicate openly about your condition and detail the steps we feel are required to find a solution. We’ll also let you know when you can scale back the treatments. The point of visiting a chiropractor is to remedy your current health situation and we want to earn your trust from the start.

    4) Feels Like Home

It’s never easy to experience healing in a cold, sterile environment. We take the time to make our office feel warm and inviting and we treat each patient like a member of the family. When you’re comfortable and relaxed the healing is much faster and more complete.
